Wireless and wired intercoms explained

There are a couple of variations of intercoms. Each comes with pros and cons, and each type can benefit different people. Firstly the definition of an intercom is that it is an electronic device that allows either one-way or two-way communication (depending on your needs and preference) .

An intercom is a device that can transmit and receive audio and in some cases video as well (again this is dependent on your needs and preferences). The sole purpose of an intercom is communication.

Intercoms can be used in homes, businesses ,complexes ,hotels and in many other useful locations.

Listed below are the different types of intercom , along with an explanation of each:

  1. Wireless intercoms- A wireless intercom is a device that does not require wires to run between the intercom stations. Examples of wireless intercoms are hand-held radio devices and wireless outdoor call boxes. A pro to using a wireless intercom system is that it’s very simple to use. A con could be that with hand-held radio devices the range of communication may not be large with certain devices.
  1. Wired intercoms- With a wired intercom, wires are run between the locations of the intercom systems. For a video intercom system , a wired one is a better way to go. It provides you with more privacy as it gets rid of any interference from neighbouring intercom systems. A pro is that the range can be increased. The range will be as long as the cables and wires can run. A con is that it is very difficult to do a self installation without any prior training and you would have to hire a professional to do the installation for you, which is an additional cost.
